For over 100 years in the middle of June a fleet of nearly 200 sailboats departs Newport, Rhode Island bound for Bermuda. The 635 mile ocean race crosses the Atlantic and is known as a challenging race due to the nature of the wind, current from the Gulf Stream, and Mother Nature. The boats are separated into 5 Divisions and further separated by classes.
It is very easy to get hooked on the Bermuda Race. During the 2010 event we watched glorious sunsets and sunrises while working through the technical challenges of crossing the Gulf Stream in a small boat. Boat preparation is a vital part of the race. The guys at Waterline Systems and Rodger Martin Yacht Design did a fabulous job. It was amazing how quickly the time prior to the race went by after our initial decision to participate. The people of Bermuda were amazing and it was a gorgeous island. The trip back from Bermuda was challenging as we encountered a variety of conditions while sailing with storm sails for nearly 72 hours.
Additionally, Sailor Bandido Racing is hoping raise awareness and funds to support early cancer detection, research, support, and prevention. We are soliciting your support. Please consider donating to The Little Red Door, and the American Cancer Society by clicking on their links.
The Little Red Door, founded in 1945 is an Indianapolis based organization that provides education, screening, detection, and services for patients. Little Red Door Cancer Agency (www.littlereddoor.org) strives to make the most of life, and the least of cancer by reducing the physical, emotional and financial burdens of cancer for underserved and uninsured residents of Central Indiana.
The American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org ) is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. With more than two million volunteers nationwide, the American Cancer Society is one of the oldest and largest voluntary health agencies in the United States.
When detected early, cancer can be a curable illness. Unfortunately too many people die from cancer each year. Additionally, cancer is often caused by life choices, such as cigarette smoking, or exposure to harmful UV radiation or chemicals.
We also have some limited advertising opportunities on the boat as well. Please send me an email if you are interested in discussing how we can aid your marketing efforts.
